Just Kidding!

Few months back, I had seen a picture posted by someone on a social networking site, which disturbed me a lot.

What was the picture?

It was a Muslim couple, dressed in their wedding outfits, sitting on a swing in a garden (looked like they were posing for a wedding photo). No, this is not what disturbed me, it was the caption. It was meme-d, on it was written, “If it was not for Istikhara*, this would have been us.” When I saw that, I could feel my blood boiling.

No, this is not the only one, I could go on giving examples, where some or most important matters of the Deen (religion) are taken lightly, it comes with a tag #MuslimHalalPickUpLines. Since when? Since when did we have #PickUpLines that directly, or indirectly make fun of the matters of Religion?

Istikhara is not something you pray, and the next day you dream that you should go ahead with the matter you prayed for or against. It is not something that you joke about. It is you seeking the counsel of The King Of Kings, The Most Merciful, The Knower of the Unseen – Allah سبحانه وتعالي .

Another one I saw recently was something more worse, it was a guy throwing the money up and all over, it was captioned, “Me on the Day of Judgement after someone backbites me.” Seriously? It’s like you have imagined the impossible and trying to make a joke out of it. Firstly, back-biting is not from the character of a Muslim. Secondly, we wouldn’t want some one else to backbite us.  The Day of Judgement is something that is impossible to imagine, even reading about it will give you chills down the spine.

And recently I saw another one, a guy smartly dressed, captioned, “Hey girl, I heard you want to go for Hajj, let me be your  Mahram.” Come on! This has crossed the limits. Why are you mocking the mahram issue in order to go Hajj. A mahram is not someone who is on sale on the shops, he is your care-taker,protector and your personal bodyguards. And if a girl doesn’t have a mahram to accompany her to Hajj, she will not be held accountable.

Allah says:

{That [is so]. And whoever honors the symbols of Allah – indeed, it is from the piety of hearts} (Surah Hajj: 32)

Also, making fun of religious matters, whatever has come in the Qur’an or the sunnah, is from among the things which nullify one’s Islam. Allah says:

{And if you ask them, they will surely say, “We were only conversing and playing.” Say, “Is it Allah and His verses and His Messenger that you were mocking?”. Make no excuse; you have disbelieved after your belief.} (Surah Tawbah: 65/66)

Yes, the matter is grave, and we need to be careful on what we joke around with.

Shaykh Muhammad ibn ‘Uthaymeen said in al-Majmoo’ al-Thameen, 1/63:
“The matters of Divine Lordship, Prophethood, Revelation and religion are sacred matters which are to be venerated. It is not permissible for anyone to show disrespect towards them, whether by mocking them to make others laugh or to poke fun at them. If anyone does that, he is a kaafir, because this is indicative of his disrespect towards Allaah and His Messengers, Books and Laws. Whoever does that has to repent to Allaah for what he has done, because that is a kind of hypocrisy. So he has to repent to Allaah, seek His forgiveness, mend his ways and develop fear of Allaah, veneration towards Him and love for Him in his heart. And Allaah is the Source of strength.

But hey! Joking and playing around is not haraam. It is not something which is not allowed in Islam! We could joke around within limits, unless it is a lie or hurts someone’s feelings or go against the boundaries set by Allah and His Messenger  صلى الله عليه وسلم .

Abu Hurairah narrated:
“They said: ‘O Messenger of Allah! You joke with us?’ He said: ‘Indeed I do not say except what is true.'” (Hasan) (At-Tirmidhi)
Ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) was asked, “Did the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) laugh?” He said, “Yes, and the faith in their hearts was like mountains.”
May Allah guide us all to what pleases Him and keep us steadfast till we meet Him in Jannah.
