Would you rather be a Doctor or Engineer or…?

I picked up my mobile to see what time it was. I couldn’t be more shocked to see that it was half past two already…

I had spent the whole evening understanding Tafseer and my mind was too concentrated to absorb anymore explanations.

I reminded myself of the Nahu period that I will have to attend tomorrow along with the Tafseer assessment and decided to give myself some rest. I went to bed with the following ayah in my mind:

(‘يؤتي الحكمة من يشاء و من يؤت الحكمة فقد أوتي خيرا كثيرا و ما يذكر إلا أولو الألبب’ ( سورة البقرة ٢٦٩

“He giveth wisdom unto whom He will, and he unto whom wisdom is given, he truly hath received abundant good. But none remember except men of understanding.” (Surah Al Baqarah 269)

This world has seen a lot of prodigies in recent times, students of many prominent fields like Medicine, Business, Law, and Engineering have put their hearts and souls in moulding Science and related subjects into a ‘dream come true’ that all the 21st century has witnessed.

I want to discuss about another group of students today, rarely known in our society, whose talent and determination is largely ignored and their presence is kept hidden by the roaring media and glossy magazines cover pages.

They are the students of religion…yes the ones who make the Quran their friend and the Sunnah their way of life.

History has seen large number of these students but in our times they are hard to find. You might not remember coming across one yourself, but I will help you remember some of them. Let me take you to the time of the prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم , do you remember his followers? Like Abu Bakr Siddique, Umar Bin Al khattab, Usman Bin Affan, and Bilal Bin Rabah… Well they were the very first students of religion.

Now how about some historical figures like Mohammad Bin Qasim, Tariq Bin Ziyad, Sultan Salahuddin Ayyubi, Tipu Sultan, Mohammad Al Fatih and the list goes on… You must have come across these names in your history books. Who do you think were they? They were all students of Islam!

In our times you won’t get to see a Khalid Bin Waleed or Musa Bin Nusair but there has always been a group of people that follows their legacy. Islam came down at a point when the whole world was a chaos. Women were disrespected, poor were disgraced, orphans were shunned, racism was at its peak and evil had its roots dug deep. At this time Allah سبحانه وتعالى chose the advent of Islam, do you know why? Well that’s because Islam is the key to peace, love, respect, success and most of all unity and brotherhood. It cut off the roots of evil and brought justice to the unbalanced society of men. People who first learned this religion and preached it to others became the very first students of Islam. They helped it spread across the oceans and laid down its roots strongly. From then on students of Islam have been the key factor in bringing peace and justice to the people.

I have been asked by many people to rate the students of Islam as they doubt their wisdom and talent. Have you ever come across a student of the any field who reads a mere page from his book, thinks over it the whole night, his eyes become moist with the fear of Allah سبحان تعالى and he changes himself for the better throughout his life? Have you ever come across someone who leaves the comfort of his bed and studies all night long out of love for knowledge? If not then indeed you have not come across a student of religion.

History has proved to us that its not the Doctors, Engineers or Lawyers who made the difference or brought about a change to this world. They merely learn a small part of Islam and practice it. Islam my dear fellows is a complete form of guidance. It teaches Medicine, Mathematics, Science, Psychology, Law and much more and students of Islam are very well acquainted with all these fields.

Indeed the word of Allah سبحانه وتعالى is true and the wise in the sight of Allah سبحانه وتعالى is the one who is given Hikma, the knowledge of the Quran.

I would like to take this moment to appreciate the hard work of the students of Islam. They leave their desires and suppress their wishes for the sake of Allah سبحانه وتعالى. They wear themselves out learning and learning and learning this vast ocean of knowledge. Their hard work and determination has not been seen among any other kind of students.

I will now leave you to choose among Doctors, Engineers and students of Islam.
