Has anybody ever asked you this?

Has anybody ever asked you why do you pray five times a day? Has anybody asked you why do you respect your parents to the degree that you don’t look in their eyes or shout at them? Has anybody ever called you a terrorist when you introduced yourself as a Muslim? Has anybody ever asked why you defend Mohammad? Has anybody ever asked you why do you follow such an old book?

Well if you live in a Muslim minority area, you would have definitely come across people who might have asked you such kind of questions. The question I want to ask you today is How many times were you able to clear up a misunderstanding about the religion of Allah? How many times were you confident about what you are doing as a Muslim has some reason behind it? Unfortunately many of us end up getting humiliated by the questions of the non-Muslims since we ourselves don’t know much about Islam. That is quite a shame but the point over which I would like to stress is why are we Muslims without Islam. Allah سبحانه وتعالى mentions in the Quran ‘وما خلقت الجن والانس إلا ليعبدون’  ‘I have not created the jinn and men but to worship me’ (51:56). The purpose of our lives is clear, submitting our will to Allah سبحانه وتعالى, in other words living as Muslims. We have forgotten a great part of the teachings of Quran and Sunnah with time as our hearts got attached to the duniya (world).

So the question of the day is why are we Muslims if we don’t know Islam?

A doctor is only called a doctor if he knows how to cure people. He learns how to do that by learning in an university for quite a long period of time, working hard and taking up responsibility for the lives of people. Likewise when someone reads the Quran, understands it, follows it, and learns the Sunnah, takes up his /her responsibility as a Muslim…that’s when one becomes a Muslim. It is our responsibility as Muslims to learn about Islam, to be precise it’s obligatory upon us to study Islam. Islam is a way of life so to live you have to know Islam. Just like how we attend 12 years of school, then work hard to get ourselves a dozen degrees, we should be learning about Islam as well. The knowledge of Islam is the real knowledge. Allah سبحانه وتعالى has laid down complete guidelines for us in the Quran, taught us everything we need in life through it. Gaining this knowledge should be the prime focus of all Muslims since it’s the Haq (truth) and there is no other way to success for a Muslim than through Islam.

Umar رضي الله عنه once said’ We were the most humiliated people on Earth and God gave us honour through Islam. If we ever seek honour through anything else, God will humiliate us again.’ And this is exactly what has happened. We seek honour through money, status, worldly knowledge and as a result we have been a target of humiliation for quite some time now. If you want to rise, if you want success, if you want love, if you want peace, if you want satisfaction, and if you want knowledge, LOOK for it in Islam. You will not just find it, you will reach the heights that no one has reached just like Allah سبحانه وتعالى has promised us.

Before you go to sleep today, try asking yourself if you are really qualified to be a Muslim. Have you really taken up your responsibility as one? Don’t wait for an ignorant person to ask you about Islam and make you realise your own ignorance…
