Your favorite mug broke into pieces, the mirror on your bedroom wall cracked and its almost going to break, nothing is going right while you were getting ready for work, things kept falling, a black cat crossed while you were waiting for the signal to turn green, you ran into your boss and had an argument with him, and finally when you reach your office, you realize, you forgot the file you were supposed to submit. Does this bad start to the day and a black cat crossing your path mean its going to be a bad day? The society that we are from, be it desi or a western society, these things like a glass breaking or black cat crossing, we have to admit, deep down, we are affected by them. (If not all of us, many of us do get affected by it, it might not be a strong belief in that, but at least you must have felt a tiny pull towards believing in that). The point is, we are humans, the heart that we are gifted with is very weak, that is the reason why the heart is called ‘Qalb’ is because ‘Qalb’ means to flip and change. And in the Hadith of Abdullah bin ‘Amr bin al-‘Aas said, that he heard Allaah’s Messenger saying, “All the hearts of the offspring of Aadam are between two fingers of Ar-Rehman’s Fingers, as one heart. He turns it (in any direction) as He wills. Then Allaah’s Messenger said, “O Allaah! The Turner of the hearts, turn our heart towards Your obedience.” [Saheeh Muslim vol.4, p.1397, no.6418] And when a black cat crosses our path, and if we believe that the black cat crossing decides our day being good or bad, it falls under minor shirk. And minor shirk is not as minor as we think, it is a way towards falling into associating partners with Allah, in other words, it is a pathway towards major shirk. And our Creator knowing that our heart is weak, He سبحانه وتعالى through His Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم has taught us what to do when we are faced with such situations and we are inclined towards/ almost believe that a black cat crossing, a mirror breaking has something to do with how our day goes. You have to seek help from Allah, put your trust in Him and say: (اللهم لا يأتي بالحسنات إلا أنت، ولا يَدفَعُ السيئات إلا أنت ولا حول ولا قوة إلا بك) (O Allah ! You Alone bring good things; You Alone avert evil things, and there is no might or power but in You)- Sunan Abu Dawood So the next time when a black cat crosses, or you see something that you dislike, remember the dua’ 🙂 P.S: “Stop laughing too much! You might cry later” < also falls into that category!
May Allah Bless you all!
